Home Dyed Cloth Napkins

I had a large stack of white cloth napkins sitting around our house – I wanted to dye them, but was scared about how they would turn out.

Maybe I didn’t need to be – run some water with the RIT dye and let the napkins sit in the dye until dark. Run them through the washing machine and you are done!

It’s so easy to do and the results are beautiful!

Preserving Apples

Apples are a wonderfully yummy snack – especially for on the go!

The process is quite simple. Peel apples if desired and cut into small bite size pieces. Place in the dehydrator and run until dehydrated.

Afterwards, these can be stored away for a quick on the go treat – it’s an especially tasty mid-morning pick me up snack!

Can you be a minimalist and a teacher?

Many teachers have cabinets stuffed full of materials, materials shoved in corners, and shoved in the top of the cabinets.

I claim to be a minimalist – and I also teach kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. Can the two coincide?

I purchase the teaching materials I need, take good care of them, and use the same materials for a variety of activities – this is all possible through good organization!

(my math and reading cabinet)

With very simple organization methods I believe that a classroom can be an organized place. I love making use of a variety of sizes of sterilite brand tubs to organize my teaching materials. I determined how to best fit the boxes into my cabinets and determined what supplies fit into those boxes. Math supplies together, reading supplies together, motor development supplies together, toys together, etc.

(toys – the kids pick out their own toys when they earn free play time)

After the supplies are all organized into the cabinets, labels become a girls best friend! Label those boxes (with words for boxes adults use and pictures for boxes kids use) and you can easily find whatever material you are looking for. Then label the cabinets – to make sure you remember what is inside of them.

This system works well in my classroom. Myself and my paras can easily find exactly what we need to find to teach our students. Being able to easily find whatever materials we need enables us to be minimalist and teach all those little people at the same time!

Preserving Onions

We don’t eat onions very fast around here. Cole is not a huge fan at all. However, we love the flavor of onions and use onion powder a lot in our cooking.

An easy way to preserve onions is to slice them into small slivers and dehydrate them. After they are completely dry, crumble them up to make chopped onion for use in recipes or grind them up to make onion powder.

It’s super easy and a very simple way to preserve onions for use even when no fresh onions are in the home.

The same thing can be done with green onions – cut them into small pieces and dehydrate them for future use. If you grow them yourself, this is a super frugal way to have green onions!

Dancing in the Minefields

I love this song! I’ve heard it a few times on the radio while driving to work and it makes me smile every time. My love and I married young, despite many judgements from the people around us, and we are so glad we did! We have been through good times and some rough times….and we are sure that there are many more of both still to come. But, we know we have God by our sides and with him our marriage will stand strong in the end!
