Many teachers have cabinets stuffed full of materials, materials shoved in corners, and shoved in the top of the cabinets.
I claim to be a minimalist – and I also teach kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. Can the two coincide?
I purchase the teaching materials I need, take good care of them, and use the same materials for a variety of activities – this is all possible through good organization!
(my math and reading cabinet)
With very simple organization methods I believe that a classroom can be an organized place. I love making use of a variety of sizes of sterilite brand tubs to organize my teaching materials. I determined how to best fit the boxes into my cabinets and determined what supplies fit into those boxes. Math supplies together, reading supplies together, motor development supplies together, toys together, etc.
(toys – the kids pick out their own toys when they earn free play time)
After the supplies are all organized into the cabinets, labels become a girls best friend! Label those boxes (with words for boxes adults use and pictures for boxes kids use) and you can easily find whatever material you are looking for. Then label the cabinets – to make sure you remember what is inside of them.
This system works well in my classroom. Myself and my paras can easily find exactly what we need to find to teach our students. Being able to easily find whatever materials we need enables us to be minimalist and teach all those little people at the same time!
