One simple thing we have done to help organize the coat closet is purchasing two canvas bins – one for Cole and one for me. Each of these bins holds our ball caps, winter hats, gloves, scarves, etc. All the things that are handy to have in the same area as our coats.

They sit well on the top shelf and are easily accessed as needed, all year long.

I’ve seen people do this with children too – they get a small basket or bin similar to ours and put the a child’s name on each basket. This seems like a wonderful idea that we will most likely implement when we have little ones.

I LOVE having people in my home. And one of my greatest desires in life is to have the kind of home where my family and all who enter feel as though they are welcome and at home. This is something that I pray about frequently and that I try to plan for very intentionally.

———-

Sometimes parts of luggage get left at home and sometimes needs arise that you could not have planned for. That’s when the top left hand drawer of our guest bathroom comes in handy.

In this drawer I keep body products that have been gifted to me but I cannot use due to my allergies or free samples of products that I have obtained. If an item starts to run low, I search for a way to obtain samples for use by our guests or I purchase the necessary item.

We keep things like toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, shampoo, soap, razors, deodorant, and lotion. This way our guests never have to feel like they were without an item that they needed while visiting.

It’s a simple thing, but a very easy way to help guest feel welcome and appreciated.

One area that we have been minimizing recently is the book collection.

I am a reader. I love to read. I am frequently at the library picking up huge stacks of books. And, until recently we had eight shelves filled with books – and no end in sight for when the book buying would end.

I began sifting through my books – I identified many books that would probably not be read again or that were not absolute favorites; these I removed from the shelves. I also removed most of my fiction books as I tend not to read most fiction a second time. This got me down to less than five shelves of books.

After much consideration and price comparisons, we decided that it would be a good idea to purchase a Kindle for me. I enjoy reading several books at the same time – this way I can have several different books with me at the same time. This also provides an incredibly compact way to store all of the books that I purchase and read over and over again (I am an unashamed book re-reader!).

(My reading corner – with my reader’s journal and kindle in it’s green cover!)

Kindle books are less expensive to purchase, after purchasing only a few books, I will be able to make up the money spent to purchase the Kindle.

Benefits of the Kindle that I have enjoyed:

having a variety of books with me on the road

word games that my husband and I can play together

small and compact – easy to carry a book wherever I go!

reading the bible and having access to all of my bible study tools available at bible study without carrying a stack of books with me

taking sermon notes right next to the scripture passage during sermons

free copies of classic literature through Amazon

Through some careful considerations of which books I will actually read again (and purging those that I will not) and using the Kindle to purchase new books for my collection, we were able to drastically minimize the collection of books at our home!

Technology is such a helpful tool in minimal living!

One of my 101 Things to accomplish in 1,001 days was to find a way to creatively display my wedding vows. My Grandmother made us a beautiful wedding cross-stitch, which combined with a wedding picture and our typed vows make a very pretty little display in our bedroom. I used one black frame, one gold, and one brown. When spray-painted black they all look the same!

(The wedding quilt my Mom made us is folded over the chair – it’s too hot during a Kansas summer for more than a sheet!)

A closer view:

I think it adds a special touch to our room to have our beautiful wedding sampler and our vows hung on the wall. They serve as a good reminder of the precious gift and joyful work of being married!
