Kinda Krunchy :: Food Storage

There has been so much talk lately about the safety of plastics. Depending on what you read and where you will get very differing views on what is safe to use and what is not. Listening (or reading) all of the debate about which plastics are safe, which could kill us, which shouldn’t be microwaved, etc. could send a perfectly sane person into an asylum.

We would rather be safe than sorry at our house which is why we are trying to eliminate our plastic and switch to other materials. (slowly, because who has the money to completely replace every piece of plastic in their kitchen?)

Some simple changes that we have been making over the past year:
– using mostly glass drinking glasses
– using our fantastic Fiesta Ware dinner dishes instead of plastic
– using Pyrex dishes to cook food and store leftovers
– using our cast iron skillet and pot more often
– using stainless steel water bottles
– store foods in glass mason jars
– use more wooden, stainless steel, and silicone cooking utensils

My favorite thing about these changes is that glass comes much cleaner than plastic – it doesn’t hold onto smells or colors the way that plastics do. This is another added benefit!

    The cast iron skillet is also nice for adding extra iron to your diet! I need to invest in one of those sometime!

    Your choices for items over plastic is very inspiring. I have never thought of all of those. I guess I have some major changes I need to be implementing at our house. I am LOVING your posts, Vanessa! Can’t wait for more…

  3. What great, yet simple changes! Plastic water bottles, which leech harmful chemicals into the water when the temperature rises above 70*F, has been connected to cancer. Your family is going to be so much healthier for it.

    Do you have any suggestions for decorating lids of reused jars to make them look more uniform? I have several jars from Tostitos and BBQ sauces that I’d love to somehow paint or decorate so that they match each other (especially since the sides of decorated with brand names too!). I have a hard time finding info about food-safe paints or finishes, so I’m open to alternatives.

  5. Finding your blog was what encouraged me to switch to glass food storage. =)
