This is a really simple change to make but it is one that tends to make people say “eew” when they first think about it. I too, said the same thing and now I am loving it! I should also state that it feels really weird to publicly talk about my smelly arms and my deodorant; it’s just not something that I typically do!

Deodorant:
I got the idea for this deodorant from Lindsay; it has worked as well for me as I could have ever hoped!

Mix equal parts baking soda and cornstarch in a ball jar. Baking soda effectively eliminates odors in the fridge, why not under your arm. Cornstarch thickens liquids so it helps to reduce the amount of sweat on your clothes.

While you could just pat these powders onto your skin, I prefer a little moisture to help ensure that the powders stay where they are supposed to be. Add coconut oil (in very small amounts) to the powders until the mixture is the consistency that you like.

I store this in a ball jar and apply just a pinch of it to each arm with my fingers. Hubby is more than willing to try this recipe, but is not keen about applying it with his hands. When he is finished with his current stick of deodorant, I am going to try to fill the container up with this mixture and see if it works. I’ll let you know if I am successful!

I love this recipe because it leaves no strong scent on my body – I used to hate it when I could smell my deodoran during the day. The smell was just to strong! Nothing but clean here!

This is a great deodorant mixture – it has held up in a Kansas summer so I am sure that it can hold up anywhere. I tested it at the zoo, working out, gardening, and mowing the yard. And no stinkies whatsoever!

Baking soda is around $.50 a box and cornstarch is a little bit less than $1. This recipe uses very little of these two ingredients and extends a long way. Coconut oil costs $5.58 at Wal-Mart but only pennies of that oil goes into this recipe.

A note on coconut oil: It’s solid at room temperature, but if the bathroom heats up quite a bit during your shower it will melt into a liquid. Just so you aren’t surprised the first time that this happens!

This post is a part of Frugal Friday!

As we’ve run out of things, I’ve tried replacing them with environmentally friendly things (not just pitching them, b/c that’s worse!) One thing I’ve wondered how to do is deodorant. When I run out, I’ll have to give this a shot! I like your coconut oil idea!

Hi! I just wanted to say I am now subscribed to your blog! You have some great information on here. I am off to try the hydrogen peroxide and vinegar on my shower door. If it gets that clean, I’ll love you for life! :)
