While I was in Iowa I read my Grandma’s Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook. I talked about that book here.
While I was reading I was struck and challenged by these two statements:
Your table decorations are an invitation to pleasant eating. They’ll make your meal a treat from the very first sight.
Today you go to the job with a spirit of adventure rather than a duty-at least you should. For whether it’s a company meal with your best china or just a soup-and-sandwich lunch or the family, a pretty table makes the food taste better. You don’t have to serve a formal dinner to set a striking table. In fact, you can do it for every meal.
Thus, I have recently made an effort to tidy up our kitchen table and use it for serving beautiful meals only. Before this has been used as a place for new mail, mail that needed filed, jewelry from the day before, and other items that built up over several days and were cleaned up on the weekend.

I am making a conscious effort to make dinner a “pretty” time for our family. Instead of just nourishing our tummies, I want meal time to be a time when our spirits are also lifted and renewed through beauty.
What do you do to make your table beautiful? I am always looking for suggestions!
