Whenever I purchase split chicken breast or a whole chicken I try to use as much of the purchase as possible. One way to make use of every part of the bird is to make my own broth. It is so yummy, so cheap, and makes the house smell so good!
Here’s what I do:
As I strip the meat from the bones, I put all the bones, fat, skin, etc. into the bowl of the crock pot. I fill the crock pot until water completely covers the chicken parts plus some (I really eye ball this – it depends on if you want your broth to have a strong or weak taste). Then I add some dehydrated veggies (I dehydrate our veggies and fruit when what we purchased for use in certain meals is about to go bad if not used and when I am able to purchase it at really low prices). I like to use onion, carrot, and celery. It looks like this from the top:

I cook the whole mixture on low for a few hours, until the whole house smells like chicken broth. I strain out all of the meat, bones, veggies, etc. Then I either freeze it for use later or put it in a ball jar in the fridge.
So yummy!
